With nearly 142,000 people, Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension is Montreal’s most multiethnic borough and second most populated. It’s a family-friendly area with tree-lined lanes, excellent restaurants, and local stores. However, it was not always like this. Let’s take a step back in time.

The territory that now makes up the borough of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension was mainly agricultural and filled with farmland until the late nineteenth century. Villeray’s expansion was aided by the advent of electric streetcars in 1892 and the opening of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1878. The Italian immigrant community picked the neighborhood as their favorite site during this time.

Parc-Extension became industrialized in the early twentieth century, and a dozen mines developed, resulting in the area’s economic growth. The mining of the Miron and Francon quarries began in the 1940s, attracting employees to Saint Michel and Parc Extension.

This borough, which is made up of three different neighborhoods, is famous for its diversified culture and big community.
