The majority of the residents are Quebecers, although there is also a Hasidic Jewish population in the area. Outremont has been primarily residential since the 1950s.

Outremont was a separate city until the municipal mergers of 2000, and it is located north of downtown – Outremont means “beyond the mountain,”.

On the north-western side of Mount Royal, this park-filled, primarily residential suburb is found. Its oldest properties originate from the early nineteenth century, when Montréal’s French-speaking social elite developed country homes there.
