Lachine

Lachine is a borough within the city of Montreal on the Island, in southwestern Quebec, Canada.

It was named after a contraction of la petite Chine (“little China”) by the French adventurer Robert Cavelier, sieur de La Salle, as he was searching for a path to China in 1667. The site was first settled in 1675. It was here that the Iroquois massacred roughly 250 French inhabitants and soldiers in 1689. Lachine was once an important stopping point for fur traders on their trip to the West. It was formed as a city in 1848 and remained so until 2002, when it was integrated into Montreal.

Pharmaceuticals and machinery for the pulp and paper sector are among the local industries. Rolls Royce Canada Limited has its headquarters in Lachine, where commercial and military aircraft engines are built and maintained. A big marina for leisure boating is located in the borough. The Le Ber–Le Moyne House (1669), an archaeological collection, and two sculpture gardens make up the Lachine Museum. The Fur Trade at Lachine National Historic Site is also located in the borough. Lachine offers small-town living without being too far from downtown, thanks to its stunning waterfront, local market, and calm streets.
