Sainte-Dorothée

Sainte-Dorothée is a neighborhood of Laval, Quebec. Until the municipal mergers on August 6, 1965, it was a separate city.

Sainte-Dorothée is a fairly new neighborhood of Laval, close to Ville Saint-Laurent. It is bounded on the east by Highway 13, and on the west by Highway 440 and Avenue des bois. The Rivière des Prairies borders the land to the south, while Rue Principale borders it to the west.

Sainte-Dorothée, formerly noted for its forests and farmlands, is not what it once was. With the entrance of SmartCentre (previously Mega Centre) Sainte-Dorothée and Mega Centre Notre-Dame during the last decade, it underwent a massive alteration. It all started with the development of Canadian Tire, IGA, and the first Wal-Mart in western Laval.

Since then, the expansion has never ended. It currently features nearly every major department store, restaurant and hundreds of shops. The area also experienced an increase in demand for residential construction, potentially as a result of the “Mega Mall” alongside Highway 13, or as a result of the mall being developed to serve the rising number of families searching for inexpensive houses close to Montreal.

A small cable ferry transports different vehicles from Sainte-Dorothée to Île Bizard over the Rivière des Prairies seasonally.

The district of Sainte-Dorothée has a population of 36,667 residents.
