Charlemagne

Charlemagne is an off-island suburb of Montreal. It is a small town that is located on the north shore of the Rivière des Prairies, 24 km northeast of downtown Montreal.

Although the location, at the confluence of the L’Assomption and Des Prairies rivers, has been inhabited since 1699, this small town was founded around a sawmill in 1870. One of the primary entrances to Lanaudière is Charlemagne. A 5.03-km bicycle route is also present and is a component of the Route verte (Green Route) network.

Celine Dion, a very famous musician, was born in this town. The town council decided to celebrate her by renaming one of its main streets. A sculpture was also built by the town in Dion’s honor. Camille Laurin, a politician, was also born in Charlemagne.
