Chambly

In southwest Quebec, Canada, Chambly is an off-island suburb of Montreal. It is located inland from the South Shore of the Saint Lawrence River in the Montérégie region.

The Chambly Basin, an enlargement of the Richelieu River, runs alongside the city. Fort-Chambly, a wooden stockade built in 1665 by Captain Jacques de Chambly, a French army officer and commander of the Carignan Regiment, was the first structure to occupy the location, which is located 14 miles (23 km) east of Montreal City. It was destroyed in 1702 by Iroquois Indians and afterwards reconstructed in stone. The fort, which was handed over to the British in 1760, was crucial to both the War of 1812 and the American invasion of 1775.

The city is now an agricultural market region that produces cash crops, dairy products, and fruits.
